CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

 

PRIMARY CLASSES (18 months - 5 years)

 

Parent and Me - 18 months to 3 years, this class is for the entire family to enjoy! Come explore with your little one as they discover how to move their bodies through song, movement, and creative play.

 

First Steps - 2.5 to 4 years, this class is for the child who is ready to be in the studio independent of their parents. Your little one will learn the basics of dance through the use of song, dance, and imaginative play.

 

Fairy Princes Ballet - 3.5 to 5 years, come and learn the ballet basics, jumps and turns through princess and fairy imagery and music. Learn fairy and princess dances, and come to this pre-ballet class dressed as your favorite princess or fairy!

 

*Tap/Jazz - 3.5 to 5 years, for the dancer who wants to learn more! This class consists of learning both styles each week. Your child will learn technique as well as choreography for both styles of dance (see Tap and Jazz descriptions separately)

 

*Ballet/Jazz - 3.5 to 5 years, for the dancer who wants to learn more! This class consists of learning both styles each week. Your child will learn technique as well as choreography for both styles of dance (see beginning Ballet and Jazz descriptions separately).

 

Hip Hop - 3.5 to 5 years, this exciting style of dance is for the student who wants to express him/herself. An ever evolving form, Hip Hop dance is all about rhythm, style, personal expression, and feeling the music, all done to new and old school, clean and age appropriate Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop music.

 

SECONDARY CLASSES (5-8 years)

 

*Tap/Jazz – 5 and 6 years, for the dancer who wants to learn more! This class consists of learning both styles each week. Your child will learn technique as well as choreography for both styles of dance (see Tap and Jazz descriptions separately)

 

*Beginning Ballet- 5 and 6 years, this class focuses on students learning how to control their bodies through stretches, balancing, locomotor movement (galloping, hopping, skipping, and jumping) and body positions. Students will also learn proper Ballet classroom etiquette, as well as Ballet terminology.

 

Ballet 1 - 6-8 years old,  building on concepts learned in beginning Ballet, this class introduces students to working at the barre, followed by center exercises and then taking movements and combinations across the floor. Correct body placement, timing and terminology are emphasized.

 

Tap 1- 6-8 years old, tap is a percussive style of dance, focusing on the sound your dancer creates with their feet. Our Tap classes include extensive rhythmic combination training, focusing on rhythm comprehension, tap technique and terminology.

 

Hip Hop - 6 to 8 years, this exciting style of dance is for the student who wants to express him/herself. An ever evolving form, Hip Hop dance is all about rhythm, style, personal expression, and feeling the music, all done to new and old school, clean and age appropriate Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop music.

 

Sing Song Scenes - 5-7 years, this class contains all of the fun, but none of the pressure of a musical theater show. Scenes from different shows will be chosen each year so that every child has the chance to be a star! Your child will sing, dance, and act in this fun filled class.

 

Jr. Performance Team (by audition) - 5 to 8, this team consists of those students who want to perform outside of the studio.  Performance opportunities include our annual recital, studio and community events. Styles of dance will include Tap, Hip Hop, Jazz, Praise Dance, and Ballet. The audition for this age group will consist of Lyric staff assessing your child’s eagerness to dance in a group setting.

 

UPPER LEVEL CLASSES (8 years and up)

 

Dance Fundamentals - For the student who is new to dance! Come and learn the dance basics of Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Contemporary Dance, including body positions, proper alignment, form and technique.

 

*Jazz/Hip Hop, for the dancer who wants to learn more! This class consists of learning both styles each week. Your child will learn technique as well as choreography for both styles of dance (see Jazz and Hip Hop descriptions separately).

 

It’s all Rhythm - 8-11 and 12+ years, this class consists of Hip Hop, Stepping (creating rhythm with your body), Tap (creating rhythm with your feet) and West African dance. Be amazed as your child develops confidence in all 4 styles over the course of the year and ends with an extraordinary recital number combining all 4 styles! Ideal for the student who wants to learn more but may not have the time to take several classes a week.

 

Lyrical/Contemporary - 12 years and up, for the dancer who wants to learn more! This class consists of learning both styles each week. Your child will learn about emoting, timing, dynamics, levels, and interesting pathways in forms of dance that combine several genres including modern, jazz, ballet, and African.

 

Ballet 2 - 9-12 years, while learning proper Ballet classroom etiquette, this class will teach students body positions, as well as how to control their bodies using core strength. Encompassing beginning Ballet concepts, this class introduces students to working at the barre, followed by center exercises and then taking movements and combinations across the floor. Correct body placement, timing and terminology are emphasized.

 

Tap 2 - 9-12 years, Tap is a percussive style of dance, focusing on the sound your dancer creates with their feet. Our Tap classes include extensive rhythmic combination training, focusing on rhythm comprehension, tap technique and terminology.

 

Tap 3 - 13+ years, Tap is a percussive style of dance, focusing on the sound your dancer creates with their feet. Our Tap classes include extensive rhythmic combination training, focusing on rhythm comprehension, tap technique and terminology.

 

*Jazz - Jazz dance encompasses a wide variety of other styles. Combining the basic techniques of ballet with the more modern steps found in Pop and Musical Theater Dance, our Jazz classes focus on strength, and flexibility, while including leaps, turns and center combination work to pop music and show tunes.

 

*Hip Hop - This exciting style of dance is for the student who wants to express him/herself. An ever evolving form, Hip Hop dance is all about rhythm, style, personal expression, and feeling the music, all done to new and old school, clean and age appropriate Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop music.

 

Beginning Ballet - 13+ years, for teens and adults who are new to ballet or who have not studied in a while. This class will include basic Ballet exercises, body positions, barre work, center floor exercises and combinations, and movements across the floor.

 

Sr. Performance Team (by audition) - 8 years and up, this team consists of those students who want to perform outside of the studio.  Performance opportunities include our annual recital, studio and community events. Styles of dance will include Tap, Hip Hop, Jazz, Praise Dance, West African, and Ballet. The audition for this age group will consist of Lyric staff assessing your child’s desire to dance in a group setting, as well as the ability to pick up choreography.

 

Competition Team (by audition) - 8+ years, this group of dedicated dancers consists of those students who want to perform outside of the studio, as well as compete state and potentially nationwide. Competition season goes from November-April of each year with LPAA comp team members participating in at least 3 competitions throughout the year.   Performance opportunities include our annual recital, studio and community events. Styles of dance will include Tap, Hip Hop, Jazz, Praise Dance, Stepping (making rhythm with your body), Contemporary, West African, and Ballet. The audition for this age group will consist of Lyric staff assessing your child’s ability to effectively learn and execute choreography. Competition team members are required to take no less than 5 hours of dance a week including different technique classes, and 1 half hour a week in a leaps, turns, and tricks class.

 

Leaps, Turns, and Tricks - 8+ years, this half hour class is for the student who wants that extra edge in dance. A requirement for all competition team members, this class teaches the technique for all types of dance jumps, turns, acrobatics and tumbling.

 

Adult Cardio Hip-hop -13 through adult. A high impact cardio class taught to current pop music, this fun yet challenging class will keep your heart rate up and your dress or pants size down.

 

Teen/Adult Beginning Hip-hop - Ages 13 and up - this exciting style of dance is for the student who wants to express him/herself. An ever evolving form, Hip-hop is all about rhythm, isolation, style, personal expression, and feeling the music, all done to new and old school Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop music.

 

Show Choir (by audition) – Think Glee meets Sister Act 2! For student’s ages 11 to 18, this choir will perform and/or compete at the state, and potentially national, levels. Combining singing and dancing, this 2 hour class will include vocal and dance technique lessons, choreography workshops, and entertaining musical numbers.

 

Advanced Hip-hop – Ages 13 to 17 – This class is for the advanced Hip-hop student who welcomes the challenge of isolation, rhythmic variation and intricate movement in their learned choreography.

 

Adult Contemporary - 17 years and up, for the dancer who wants to learn more! You will learn about emoting, timing, dynamics, levels, and interesting movement pathways that combine several genres including modern, jazz, ballet, and African.
 

Grown and Sexy – Ages 21 and up – This seductive fusion of dance styles incorporates belly dancing, vogue, and booty popping (twerking). Get a great work out, all while learning movements that are sure to tease and please your significant other.

 

NEW CLASS OFFERINGS!

 

Rhythms of the Diaspora (Percussions / Drumming) - 4 years and up, children will learn how to play percussion instruments from the diaspora. Students will use djembes, djun djuns, congas, bongos and small hand held percussion instruments to make the rhythms of the diaspora.

 

Fashion/Costume Design - 8 years and up, students will learn how to make garments from start to finish. A stand alone course, or taught as a component of our musical theater classes, students will learn how to sketch designs, cut patterns and sew garments on a sewing machine.

 

Petit Productions - 8-11 years, is your child a potential triple threat? If so, enroll them in our musical theater class. Children will learn and perform a full musical theater production and perform it in its entirety with sets and costumes, using singing, dancing, and acting!

 

Broadway Bound - 12-18 years, is your child a potential triple threat? If so, enroll them in our musical theater class. Children will learn and perform a full musical theater production and perform it in its entirety with sets and costumes, using singing, dancing, and acting!

 

DJ / Turntablism - 12 years and up, students will learn the art of turn tablism. Students will practice kutting (scratching), beat juggling , and music mixing in this fun and exciting class. 

 

Class Voice - 7 to 15 years, this class focuses on the mechanics of singing. Breath control, support and good vocal habits are studied in this class. This is an ideal class for students taking our Petit Productions, Broadway Bound Junior and Senior Show Choir Classes; as well as for other students who want vocal training to support their personal performance practices.

 

Applied Voice - (Individual Vocal Study)

*Prerequisites (incoming high-school freshman or the completion of one year of Class Voice) This class focuses on the mechanics of singing. Breath control, support and good vocal habits are studied in this class. This is an ideal class for students who want vocal training to support their personal performance practices. Exceptions for enrollment will be made on a limited basis depending upon prior vocal experience. Scheduling based on student/teacher availability.Applied Voice - (Individual Vocal Study)

 

Music Fundamentals - 14 to 18 years, learn basic musicianship skills including beginning music theory, ear training and sight singing. This is an ideal course for students taking Class Voice, Broadway Bound and/or Senior Show Choir.

 

Business Cents 101 - 15 to adult. Turn your talents and abilities into dollars and cents! Topics covered in this advanced class will include entrepreneurship, personal branding, basic accounting and budgeting and personal financial planning. Students will learn how to open, legally structure and operate a small business; how to write a business plan and how to write winning grant proposals.


Adult Class Voice - 16 through adult. This class focuses on the mechanics of singing. Breath control, support and good vocal habits are studied in this class. This is an ideal class for students taking our Broadway Bound and Senior Show Choir Classes, as well as for adult students who want vocal training to support their personal performance practices.


Intro to Poetry & Spoken Word - 14 through adult. Students will learn the art of lyric and imagery as they turn dreams and memories into waves of emotion that crash and soothe and bathe and drown.  We will study various forms of poetry and prose, reading or listening to a mixture of classical and contemporary works. Students will learn to both write and recite poetry with  skill and confidence. Students will learn poetic devices and figures of speech, and receive coaching in performance, speech, tone, dynamics and cadence. Students will be challenged to discuss what inspires them and what makes them who they are. This class will bring forth expression in its most raw and pure nature.

 

Intro to Piano and Music Theory - 14 through adult. Have you always wanted to play piano? Are you a singer or music producer and wish you had a basic foundation in music to take your art to the next level? Whatever the reason, look no further! In this class, students will learn the art of playing piano and the music theory behind basic instrumentation. Lessons will include note recognition, counting time, and the differentiation between whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes. We will also go over Key Signatures, Scales, Chords, and Coordination with both hands. Students will learn to read, write, and play at a beginner level. We will go over intervals, melody, harmonic progression, and other important aspects of music theory. Students will learn several songs and exercises to help them become well versed at the beginner level of piano and music theory. We will also go over the many real life applications for piano and music theory in the artistic world.
